Fretheim Hotel was originally a farm. The farm was situated where the hotel is located today. The old farm house is currently used as historical rooms.

In the mid-1800s English lords started to come as tourists to the Sognefjord. They came with big ships, searching for good salmon rivers. They took shelter with the largest farmers, and in Flåm that was at Christen Fretheim farm. There was one Lord who rented the Flåm River for over 20 years, and each year his stay became longer and longer. After the salmon season was over, the reindeer hunting started, and then he stayed for this too. One would think that Christen Fretheim was tired of having the English guests living in his house for months at a time, so in 1879 he started to build a separate house for guests. This house was called "The English villa." Since then the hotel has been built and renovated many times and this is Fretheim Hotel today:
